Repairing Holes in Wood before You Paint

Filling Holes in House Wood when Preparing to Paint and Smooth by Sanding

It would be easier if your wooden home stayed in good shape with only occasional house repair. Only caulk and scrape some, toss down a drop cloth or two, and slap on a new coat of outdoor acrylic paint.

Maintaining your house is more difficult. For a wide variety of reasons, one almost always has to repair the wood exterior of your home.

This house of mine had to have more than just some new paint. The galvanized sheet metal edging near the roof gutters leaked and allowed rainwater to soak the wood behind the eve. Over time, the wood became rotten and caved in the painted surface.

This repair I wanted to do on my own. I was sure that wood putty would do the job.

My friend down the block repaired his wooden home frequently in an endless battle termite infestations. These jobs stood the test of time. I wanted know why his repairs did not crack.

Fix Wood Holes with the Auto Repair Filler Called Bondo and Use Cordless Sanders to Sand and Smooth

He said an experienced handyman suggested to him to use Bondo to fill any imperfections in the home’s surface. To learn more see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bondo_(putty)

I knew how Bondo worked on cars. This auto filler did not shrink. This auto filler permitted sanding and lathing. When he brought up using this auto filler, I realized quickly that repairs done this way would work.

When making repairs, the trick is to fill in the large holes in steps with big gobs initially and then thinner layers at the end. Bondo allows you to form shapes with molds, combining molding boards and regular kitchen wax paper. To prep for painting by sanding all you need to do is to use one of the woodworking power tools to make the Bondo blend smoothly with the wood.

If you have a wooden deck, you could also use Bondo to fill in gouges in the surface of your wood deck. It is sometimes necessary, when you are doing redwood deck maintenance.

Note the fact that Bondo has a distinctive light reddish color and this will be obvious, when using a light colored water sealant on your wood deck. If you want to waterproof a lumber deck after patching with Bondo, you might need to use an opaque sealant.

Also it is not necessary to go to an automotive store for Bondo. You can get Bondo at Home Depot or Lowes. Incidentally, my painting prep job still looks great after several years.
