Information on How To Sow a Lawn

If you are starting a new lawn you will need to decide on grass seed or using turf. Seeding with grass seed is very much cheaper than turf and has the advantage that you have a greater selection of various sorts of lawn seed to choose from. The best period to seed your lawn is in the Spring or Fall as you need humid and relatively warm conditions. The summer is not the best time to seed your lawn as you will need to water often and hotter conditions are not best for the young seedlings to develop.

Different kinds of grasses mature at different rates so the time it takes for your new lawn to be sturdy enough to use will depend on the type and the combination of lawn seed that you used. You’ll also have to to think about the type of lawn seed you need. There are specific shade grass seed for spots that don’t get much sunshine, sunny grass seed for areas that do! An especially popular product is Scotts grass seed.

Prepare Your Site

In advance of seeding the lawn you need to prepare the area correctly. The area you have selected should be dug thoroughly and the stones taken out and sizeable clods of earth broken up. Rake over the area and compact gently with your heels. The surface should then be scraped carefully to make furrows for the seeds.

Seeding the Lawn

There are two methods used for seeding a lawn, manually and by the use of a machine. To use a machine, weigh out the amount of seed mixture required for your area then place half into the machine and sow by moving up and down the area in strips. When you reach end of each strip, to prevent over-seeding, either use plastic to cover the ground or shut the delivery holes in the machine. You could use canes placed in the ground or garden twine to direct you. At this point place the balance of the grass seeds into the machine and, working at right angles to the first rows, finish off sowing the lawn.

If you’re manually seeding the lawn it is best to divide the area into segments of a meter square using string and sticks. Determine how much lawn seed you require for each section, weight this out and add to a small pot. Notice about how much this is so that you will not have to repeat the weighing every time. Evenly seed the first section, sowing seeds in each directions in order that they are applied evenly. Now fill up the container to about the same level as earlier and sow the next segment. Carry on until the whole area is finished.

When the entire area has been finished rake over gently and water thoroughly.During the next seven days to two weeks make sure that you water frequently if there is no rain. The seedlings will start to sprout in the course of this time.

How to Mow a Newly Seeded Lawn

When the lawn seedlings are roughly 6 cm high you can mow the lawn for the first time preferably with a rotary mower. Carefully collect grass trimmings or use a rake and be cautious not to disturb the new seedlings.
