Care for Your Lawn in Winter

In the cold weather you need to make sure that there is no new leaf growth on your lawn as this will cause it to be likely to succumb to pests and diseases. To do this gradually, lower the cutting height of your lawnmower until you are just about shearing the grass. Do this in steps over the course of a few weeks as you don’t want to abruptly remove all the tissue or cause more damage to the turf. You do not want to leave the grass above 2 inches for the winter months.

Apply fertilizer to the lawn at the end of fall. Although it won’t be utilised by the lawn during the slow growth of the cold weather it will be stored in the roots and will be immediately usable by the grass in the Spring as new growth starts again. If you have brown areas reseed them at this time. During the colder weather the grass seeds will germinate.

Clear up any rubbish from the grass before the first snowfall. This includes leaves, logs, children’s toys, flower pots etc. If not removed when it snows these will smother the grass under the covering of snow and cause damage which may make the grass susceptible to pets and diseases. During the cold season, even though the grass grows not as fast weeds will thrive so you should regularly remove weeds to stop them from harming the turf.

As well you need to water the lawn during the winter, although less than you would in the Summer. For most types of grass watering every week should be enough. Some grasses, for example rye grass, Kentucky Bluegrass and tall Fescue grow well in the cold season and should benefit from more water during this season.

If you use a watering system empty out all the water to stop damage during a frost. You do not want to start it up next Spring to find damaged pipes.

With care your lawn will survive the cold weather in excellent shape and be healthy when it starts to grow again in the Spring.  Winter lawn care is not difficult if you stick to our guidelines. You’ll find more information on lawn care and lawn mowers at lawn mower reviews.
