Watching bonsai trees develop and shaping them into beautiful living works of art is a fascinating and extremely

rewarding hobby. Growing bonsai is not an expensive hobby with few tools needed, but a beautiful bonsai tree can be much more of a centrepiece in your home than many an expensive ornament. A bonsai tree is a true living sculpture.

Bonsai Trees are container planted trees that are grown to be miniatures of the natural sized tree. Bonsai trees can be grown from nearly any perennial wood stemmed trees or shrubs that produce branches and is able to grow in miniature through container confinement with the assistance of crown and root trimming.

A Bonsai tree can be grown from seed, from young shoots taken from the wild, (please comply with any laws regarding taking wild plants in your region), or can be bought as ready grown bonsai. Obviously growing bonsai trees from seeds is the slowest route, but you do then have maximum control of how your bonsai tree will develop.

Bonsai trees are grown in special bonsai pots that restrict the development of the roots but also enhance the look of your bonsai tree. Specialist soils can be purchased that provide the perfect conditions for your bonsai to develop.

Many specialist techniques are employed to sculpt and give character to your bonsai tree including trimming leaves, wiring branches, grafting, short term dwarfing and deadwood, (a process used to age the bark). Not many special tools are required to shape bonsai, and these can easily be bought for little cost. Everything you need to get started can be easily bought from a bonsai nursery.

Bonsai trees are available as indoor and outdoor varieties, and some bonsai are improved if they are left outdoors during warmer summer months and grown inside in the winter months.

For those that like the idea, but would rather not get involved in growing bonsai, you can buy artificial bonsai trees.
