Adolescent Alcohol Abuse: A Significant Issue

Alcohol abuse statistics reveal that alcohol abuse among teens is increasing in the United States. What are some of the reasons for this? Numerous alcohol dependency consultants claim that liquor, beer, and wine advertisements produced by the media are an essential reason for the expansion of teen alcohol abuse.

Other alcoholism consultants stress the point that the increase in adolescent alcohol abuse is due to the toleration and convenience of alcohol in our society.

Still other alcohol dependency authorities state that more than a few of our teenagers involve themselves in risky drinking due to the increased anxiety that they feel.

From a slightly different viewpoint, since both parents in more than a few families are gainfully employed, the lack of parental supervision evidently has to play an important part in the escalation of teen alcohol abuse. And as a final point, different alcohol dependency authorities claim that the proliferation of youth alcohol abuse is due, in part, to our lenient society.

Coping Skills and Hazardous Drinking

One element of adolescent alcohol abuse that looks like it is deficient in the substance abuse research findings, nevertheless, is the dearth of educational courses that teach adolescents how to enhance their coping skills so that their destructive drinking behavior is extensively reduced or exterminated.

More specifically, science has made obvious the fact that there is an indirect association between poor coping skills and abusive drinking. In actual fact, this means that the poorer the coping skills, the higher the frequency of alcohol abuse. To the extent that this is a truthful allegation , why isn’t coping skills instruction a key part of the educational prospectus in all of our elementary schools, junior high schools, and high schools?

A Society That Underscores Youth Coping Skills

Let us create a scenario for the purpose of clarification. Let us imagine a society in which all individuals are trained how to achieve sound coping skills all the way from kindergarten up to and including their senior year in high school.

In such a society, when life gets difficult, individuals who are ”coping skills experts” will be able to respond in a more healthy and more productive way, as opposed to others who are unsuccessful in their attempts to put their coping skills into action.

More explicitly, students who display first-class coping skills will be more able to think logically and exhibit excellent decision making as opposed to teenagers who, because they are deficient in quality coping skills, are attracted to the “quick fix” of excessive drinking.

What would happen in the above “ideal” society, in addition, if adolescents not only got outstanding coping skills education but also received an extraordinary education that accentuated the short term and long term destructive outcomes associated with drug abuse and alcohol abuse? Emphasizing these types of drug and alcohol abuse facts, along with more highly developed coping skills instruction, it is proclaimed, would help students keep away from the apparent attraction with adolescent drinking and, accordingly, would substantially decrease the excessive drinking behavior exhibited by teenagers in our country.

Teenage Alcohol Abuse: Conclusion

There are without a doubt scores of justifiable reasons why so many of our teenagers drink in a harmful manner. Such a tricky predicament demands an extensive and more applicable educational and preventative response by our parents, educators, politicians, and students so that our youth can learn how to cope with life’s difficulties in a more productive and responsible way instead of gravitating to alcohol abuse to solve their difficulties.
