Picking the right kind of baby items — when it comes to parents and what they need for their impending arrival or newly-arrived baby — is usually priority number one for these same parents. Having a baby and then bringing it home is a joyous time, and many parents will work long and hard to get the kinds of things they think their baby needs, including bedding and furniture.

As an example, realize that parents now have a great many more options available to them when it comes to portable cribs than they had just several years ago. These handy and very useful cribs come in a large number of sizes and color schemes and at prices that really won’t (more…)

What do you think is the Most excellent Tomato Fertilizer?

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

Growing succulent and yummy tomato plants is simple, but there are some techniques you can use to further enhance the quality of the produce you reap from your tomato garden. First of all, make a decision on the type of tomato plant to utilize. The old fashioned sweet-type varieties are recommended, but some of the new hybrids are acknowledged to be more tolerant  to pests and different fungal disorders. Some varieties are sweeter than the rest when developed in an idyllic location, while others are very much reliant on soil type.

You also have to consider the farming strategies you’re going to employ for your tomato plants. You may pinch out the suckers, as some farmers do, but you can also opt not to. Select a good support system for your tomato plants, or you can just let the plants trail if you have ample space.

When you have your tomato type of choice, and you have an idea how to grow your tomato plants, it’s time to choose which supplement types to make use of for your tomato plants. Tomatoes need a constant supply of minerals. Because of this, you are required to select a fertilizer that has a high quantity of the needed nutrients, such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.

Before purchasing a fertilizer product, check the label for the NPK ratio. The numbers you will see there will correspond to a particular N-P-K formulation. A label with 5-5-5 on it indicates equivalent parts of N, P, and K are present, while 5-1-1 means the tomato fertilizer contains five times as much nitrogen as phosphorus and potassium.

Each material plays an important role in the development of your tomato plants. For greener leaves, nitrogen is crucial. For better and on-time blossoming and fruiting, you need the right amount of phosphorus. Rooting and root growth can be improved by potassium.

If, like most tomato plant gardeners in the world these days, your goal is to keep everything organic, you can use fish emulsion liquid fertilizer instead of synthetic fast-release fertilizers to supply the necessary nutrients to your tomato plant. This is a liquid fertilizer manufactured from fish residue and is extremely fast acting. The fast release attribute is specifically important for a heavy feeder like tomato. You can apply this organic tomato fertilizer directly on your plants, or you can apply them to the soil in granule form.

Growing Cilantro

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

The first time I tasted cilantro was an unforgettable experience. I was in Boston and I went to an unbelievable taqueria, the kind where they make everything before your eyes out of amazingly fresh ingredients. When they asked if I wanted some on my burrito, I had to taste it first. It was amazing. Next I created my first cilantro pesto and I was hooked.

The cilantro plant, which can grow up to 3 feet tall, has been gaining in popularity for years in Tex-Mex cuisine. If you only go by appearance, you may believe that parsley and cilantro are the same, however; once you taste the sweet muskiness of cilantro you’ll know there is no comparison. Cilantro is the name of the foliage, which has wonderful pale pink flowers, but the herb that comes from the seeds is known as coriander.

You can get your cilantro from your local nursery, but I like to begin mine from seeds. As an annual, you’ll need to start each growing season with fresh plants. I like to grow my seeds in late winter and line the containers up on my kitchen windowsill so I do not miss the small sprouts that will pop up in 7 to 10 days.

Cilantro herbs thrive on moist, rich soil, so it is best to plant them in a raised bed after the weather gets sunny. If your climate gets too hot, keep in mind that your cilantro does like some light shade in the warmest weather. Don’t forget that if your cilantro gets too much sun or too much heat it can turn bitter.

About nine weeks or so after you plant your cilantro, you will have plants with pretty lavender, white or pale pink blossoms. If you want to skip growing in pots, just wait until it gets warmer and plant the seeds outside. After you plant your seeds the clear skies and nice weather along with a little rain can turn your seeds into sprouts in less than two weeks.

For the strongest flavors, try your fresh cilantro in your summer meals. Just snip off a few leaves and add the whole thing to your dish or dice it up and add to your tacos or Mexican chicken.

Remember to dry some cilantro for the fall, winter and spring dinners. The best way to ensure that the leaves can have a heavy concentration of oils is to lop them off right before the herb blooms. You will get good results if you dry this herb on a drying rack. Keep in mind that you will need more of the dried cilantro than you will the fresh because the taste will not be as concentrated.

The very best method to harvest the coriander seed is by hanging it upside down in a paper bag to dry. Once the seeds have dried, you can discharge them from the pod by rolling them between your hands. Then you will want to freeze the seeds for a minimum of two days and then store them in a cool, dark location.

Because it is coriander is a curry spice, so the seeds can be crushed into a powder and used in baked dishes, soups, stews and casseroles.

Good luck with your herb gardening. Be sure to let me know how your herb garden grows.

Tips For The Parents Of Newborns

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

There is nothing more thrilling than the first day a newborn comes into someone’s life. After the initial feelings of joy and contentment die down, the reality of day-to-day needs becomes apparent and one realizes how many special things these little ones require. Not only are they incapable of taking care of themselves, they are frequently unable to let parents know what they need.

Planning ahead and anticipating needs is of the utmost importance prior to baby’s arrival. Not only should ample supplies be readily available when needed, but the right product for the right job also should be evaluated. Simple things like how to keep the baby clean, needs while transporting them, and deciding what to feed them can all cause new parents worry, but it should be the least of their concerns.

Newborns have yet to develop the muscle control to help parents while bathing. In fact, instinctive movements added with slippery soap can make them extremely hard to control during this daily activity. If trying to bathe an infant in a full-size bathtub, this is even more difficult. Not only are parents placed in an awkward position, but germs and bacteria in the containers can cause health problems not easily cured. Fortunately today, baby bath tubs are high-end devices that take all these issues into account.

There are many design available for this product and having the right one will not only make a parent’s life easier, but will be healthier and safer for the infant as well. Today most come with non-skid surfaces that are easy to sanitize and are very portable in order to provide more flexibility in where it can be used. Additionally, higher end models are even available in a claw foot style that is not only elegant to look at, but can be rolled to a more convenient location when being used.

Designers today are reflecting the fact that the stage from infant to child is one of significant growth and change. In order to eliminate the need for parents to constantly buy high-priced products many are now grow-with-me styles that can be adapted as the infant grows. Many know of the cribs which go from standard style, to toddler bed, to double, but few know of products like the evenflo convertible car seat which works much the same way. As the infant advances into each stage, this device converts from a backward facing infant seat, to a forward facing toddler seat, and finally a youth chair meaning it is a one-time purchase regardless of the changes in a child’s life.

One of the most important considerations is an infant’s health as they develop. Should one breast feed or bottle feed? Is it better to use processed baby food or utilize natural food products? Most manufacturing methods of baby food today require that the food be cooked until it gets soft enough to puree. The result is a loss of natural vitamins and supplements which are then added back through artificial means. For a family that eats a healthy diet based on the food pyramid, then, making baby food with special equipment like the kitchenaid food processor ensures that baby food is as healthy and natural as possible.

With all the necessities ready and available, questions on parents’ minds about what might have been forgotten will be the last concern. Research and information is available in many forms and can be accessed easily. Whether utilizing the experience of other parents, searching on the Internet, or gaining information from the many support groups today, new parents can find peace-of-mind by knowing they have the best products available for that bundle of joy that will bring years of treasured memories to any home.

Outdoor Container Gardening

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

I like to raise my herbs in strawberry pots (those cute terra cotta pots that have a lot of openings in the sides) because I can cultivate a number of herb plants in one pot. From the spindly kinds to the bushy kind and from the cascading vines to the tall spikes, the strawberry pot is perfect. Keep in mind that these containers dry out fast, so unless you are a good waterer you probably will want to stay with herbs that are drought resistant.

The size of the pot is crucial. A container that is too little will restrict your herb, eventually causing it to die. Getting a container too big will send the nutrients to the bottom of the container, beyond the reach of the short roots.

Terra cotta pots are much better than plastic containers because the terra cotta allows the soil to breathe and healthier sod yields healthier herbs. You can find terra cotta containers in lots of fun colors, shapes and sizes which will add something special to your porch or garden.

Regardless of the type of container you use, you should add some compost to the potting soil before you add your herbs. Now I make my own compost, but you can buy compost at a greenhouse or home improvement store. Oftentimes I add a little bit of sand to each pot too.

Some nice choices for herb plants to grow in pots are:

  • Dill: With dill, you can’t go wrong. It is without a doubt one of the best choices for an easy herb. Seeds work fantastic for dill too and the nicest part is that once you get it going, it will self-seed for the remainder of the growing season. Use a well-drained pot and put it so that your dill plant can get full sunlight. Dill is also gratifying in that you can harvest it not long after you plant it because it grows so fast. The seed heads, flowers and leaves can be frozen or dried for future use if you’re not able to use them immediately.
  • Garlic: You can start garlic in either spring or fall. Plant it about 2 inches deep with the clove pointing up in well drained soil and direct, natural light. It loves to be watered frequently and adding some nice compost can help it thrive. Your garlic is ready to harvest when the tops bend over. After you unearth the bulbs, you’ll want to spread them out on a flat surface to dry and after about a week their skins will start to resemble that of store-bought garlic. Then dig in!
  • Lavender: Cultivating your own lavender plants is fantastic, but don’t start with seeds because you will be waiting for an eternity. Better yet purchase a little lavender herb at the store and go from there. Use a container with good drainage that allows for lots of mulching, but also provides plenty of room for the roots. This herb can do best in direct sun, so make sure to plant it in the sunniest spot on your patio. Dried lavender makes awesome sachets and potpourris. There is really no place you cannot put these small treasures.
  • Yarrow: Yarrow is a fabulous flowers that comes in so many colors and is simply fabulous in dried floral arrangements and wreaths. You can use yarrow to make some wonderful soaps, shampoos and lotions. It really doesn’t matter if you choose to start this plant with a young herb or with seeds. Unlike most herbs, yarrow is adaptable and therefore able to do well in moist soil as well as well-drained soil. It can thrive in full sun or in a semi-shady place. Once it’s in blossom you can harvest the buds and dry them in a cool, dark location.

Good luck with your herb gardening. Be sure to let me know how your herb garden grows.

Paying Special Attention To Your Baby’s Comfort And Protection

Saturday, March 27th, 2010

Providing comfort and protection for your little one is absolutely necessary. It’s especially true of babies because of their lack of vocabulary. For parents, that means they have to figure out what is causing the baby to cry or whine. Thankfully, manufacturers of baby items have researched many items that will keep your baby safer and happier.

Many items are created specifically for babies, while others are created for everyone alike. Take for example baby bath tubs. These are created specifically to keep your child safe from any harm, while taking a bath. They are generally made with a hard plastic that will reduce any injuries from occurring, should they bumped themselves against the surface.

You should know that giving your baby a bath can be quite dangerous. When they are soapy, they are very slippery. But, if you keep bathing them in their own tubs, they will be safer. Make sure that your water temperature is checked before putting your baby inside. Do this by using your elbow. Throughout the years, our hands become desensitized to heat, therefore, we could easily burn our babies, if we don’t check properly.

Also, you should make sure that the room you are bathing them in is a the right temperature as well. If it’s too cold, bring in a portable space heater. This will quickly heat up the room and make sure that your baby doesn’t catch chill. Then, when you remove them from the bath, wrap them up in a nice warm towels. This will make the bath more fun and more comfortable for the baby.

Protection is one of the key things that you will have to provide your little one with. This is especially true when it comes time to putting them in a car. There are a multitude of products out there, like the Snugride car seat that will provide this security you are looking for.

It’s always best to choose a product that is highly recommended. However, for those people who are budget conscious, that might be a challenge. But, if you start shopping early on, you might be able to find bees, top products on sale. You can even buy them online, as many people have gotten incredible deals over the years in this manner.

The truth is that you have to consider many things when it comes to your baby. Proper clothing, right temperature in the rooms, and a slew of other things. Important to stay on top of things and make sure that everything is right. Although it might seem like a challenge in the beginning, everything will fall into place and work properly as you gain experience and confidence as a parent.

List Of What You Need When Having A Baby

Saturday, March 27th, 2010

When having a baby, one of the most important things is remembering all you’ll need to buy for the little one. Diapers, wipes, clothes, bottles, there’s many things you’ll need to put on a list. Of course, baby showers will provide most of this but you may not get everything you need, either.

You’ll obviously need a bassinet or a crib to begin with. Your baby will need somewhere comfortable and warm to sleep. You’ll also want to look at bedding collections as well. You may have a preference for polyester, or cotton or flannel, depending on whether or not your baby is allergic to any materials. Usually non-allergenic cottons are a safe bet.

Be sure to keep plenty of diapers, ointments, and bibs on hand. Onesies are a type of one piece baby clothing, and they are most used when children are infants. Clothes you’ll need will be cotton t shirts and pants or dresses, and soft cotton blankets. Depending on if you’re breast feeding or not, you may need formula.

Sometimes new mothers can’t breast feed or may be uncomfortable doing so. Formula is pricey but if you do some research on the best type of formula for your child and check with your doctor, you should find something reasonable.

Buy a snugride car seat and a stroller so you can safely transport your baby. Toys like swings and jumpers help to keep your baby active and give them exercise. They’ll love swinging or jumping from the ceiling.

While transporting, you’ll also need a diaper bag to hold all your baby supplies. A good diaper bag should have lots of pockets for bottles and baby food, wipes, washcloths, and a changing pad. There are all kinds of diaper bags for mothers with different tastes. They come in pastel colors for babies, and there are fashion diaper bags too.

One important thing to remember is a baby bath tub. When your baby is an infant it’ll be too small to wash in the regular tub. Baby bath tubs come in many shapes, sizes, and colors, and it’s also a good idea to get some baby bath toys for your baby to play with while in the tub.

When making a wishlist out for your baby shower you can put a lot of these things on there. If you’ve forgotten something or left something out, there’s bound to be a friend or family member who will remember the rest of what you need for you!

Gardening Gloves

Saturday, March 27th, 2010

Hand protection is essential when gardening, as there is hardly any joy where there is discomfort. Gardening gloves have to provide a snug fit with the possibility of digging around the desired plants. The protected impact with weeds and soil is thus a lot more rewarding. Depending on the model, gardening gloves can be thin or thick, with or without attachable projections and many other features.

gardeners gloves

One other important aspect you should check for the gardening gloves you buy is the fastening mode. Some are sleeve-like while other will not go higher than the wrist. Then, the materials that gardening gloves are made of should be washable, hypoallergenic and comfortable. Depending on the gardening job that you perform, you may have to change gardening gloves; thus you need to buy more pairs.

There is a limited offer for gardening gloves during the warm seasons, because most of the supplies sell in spring. If you don’t find the right model with your local retailer, you can search online and see what you can get. The disadvantage with Internet orders is that you cannot try the gardening gloves on and see how they fit. As for price, quality products are always more expensive.

gardening glove

Before you go shopping in home and garden stores or in department stores, you need to be well informed on the types and sizes of gardening gloves that you need to perform different tasks. The gardening jobs vary greatly, and so does the nature of the equipment required. Pay great attention to the flexibility of the materials too. You should be able to handle very intense activities with the gardening gloves on, and without any discomfort.

gardening gloves

For more gardeners in the family, buy gardening gloves for everybody. It is not good to use gardening gloves that are not fit to your size because of the very reasons we’ve mentioned above. Why make things more difficult than they are? A nice pair of gardening gloves may save you from a lot of troubles.

Making Liquid Fertilizer from Fish Waste

Saturday, March 27th, 2010

Fish emulsion is a liquid fertilizer made from fish waste. This is a liquid organic fertilizer that is good for crops and good for the natural environment. The most familiar type is manufactured from waste materials of menhaden, a small bony fish from the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea. Waste byproducts from other fishes, like wild salmon, can also be utilized to make fish emulsion fertilizers.

Oils and liquids are taken from fish waste during the cooking process. The solid waste materials are removed and transformed into animal feed and fish meal. The oil is taken out and the liquid filtrate is further processed for liquid fertilizer creation.

The unprocessed emulsion is basic, so phosphoric acid is added to make it more acidic. This process produces an acidic reaction, which serves as a stabilizer for the fish suspension. If not for this procedure, the emulsion will decay and ferment. This is a particularly vital part of the liquid fertilizer manufacturing process.

If you’ve a stable supply of fish waste, or you’ve a way of obtaining some from a local fishing port, you might want to consider making your own liquid fertilizer from the leftovers of processed fish.

There are many formulations, but the normal fish emulsion liquid fertilizer comprises about four to five percent nitrogen (N), two percent phosphorus (P), two percent potassium (K), and trace elements. These trace elements are micronutrients that crops can utilize.

Because the suspension is liquid, it can be absorbed quickly by plants. In this respect, the fish emulsion can compete with fast release fertilizers. What’s more, the fact that the processing waste materials of the fish industry are used for creating fish emulsion guarantees that this fertilizer is 100% environmentally sound.

If your gardening style involves transplants and seedlings, a quick acting organic fertilizer such as fish emulsion may be ideal for you. You have the option to apply this fertilizer directly to the foliage as foliar feed.

It’s specifically crucial to mix the suspension carefully with water before application as a high content of this liquid fertilizer can harm a crop. The stench usually goes away 24 to 48 hours after application.

While mixing fish emulsion with water is a part of the application process, the mixture cannot be kept in storage. As a result, it is better to plan ahead and utilize only what you need so you can store the thick suspension longer. Unadulterated liquid emulsion must be kept at room temperature to prevent it from heating up.
