Fun Internet Activities for Toddlers

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

Busy new mum can use these coloring links to occupy the older children.

My young nephew educated me about the fact that toddlers like online activities. As a matter of fact, he became Internet savvy at a very young age. The mouse didn’t intimidate him at all. His comfort with searching online was eventually accompanied by a real thirst to explore the online world.

His mother bookmarked all his favorites, so I went onto the sites and tried them myself. I enjoy them almost as much as my nephew does! Your children might also enjoy these fun activities.

Please note that some of the games and activities on some of the sites (or those linked from them) are for older children but plenty of them are perfect for toddlers.

Disney Preschool (http://home.disney.go.com/foryou/preschool/)
Disney offers a pre-schooler web channel, which is filled with fun videos to watch and music to listen to. They also have plenty of games, like The Great Sky Race, Inspector Ooh and Rhythms in the Warehouse. Kids can also enter the “worlds” of a variety of Disney characters, such as Mickey Mouse, Winnie the Pooh, Special Agent Oso, Little Einsteins (or “Iddle Dine-dines” as my nephew calls them) and many other kid favorites.

Hydroponic Growing System….New Age Farming!

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

Does the thought of growing delicious fruits, vegetables or herbs all year round sound like a great idea? Well, you can, and it’s a lot easier than you may think. Bold statement, I know! The answer? Hydroponics. Hydroponics is a form of growing plants in a solution rich in nutrients. This allows the plants to extract nutrients and more efficient manner than it can from soil.

Basics of A Hydroponics System

A hydroponics growing system consists of a reservoir, a light, and air pump to circulate oxygen in the solution, and that’s pretty much it. Except for of course, the seeds you intend on planting. As your plants aren’t grown in soil, pesticides and weed killer are not required, therefore reducing your time spent gardening. This means less chemicals are polluting our atmosphere, thus decreasing your carbon footprint. The nutrients in most hydroponic growing systems are mix of magnesium sulphate, calcium nitrate, potassium phosphate and potassium nitrate. Before the nutrients are circulated through the plants root system, they must be completely dissolved first.

How You Can Control The Weather

Another beauty of hydroponic growing systems is the environment in which it grows in. You have complete control over this natural phenomenon via your indoor climate control. This is why growing whatever you want, whenever you want no matter what season it is, is not an issue.

Environmental Benefits

In addition to the ability to control the growing environment, there are also environmental benefits to using a hydroponic growing systemFirstly, a hydroponic growing system can produce a larger crop in a considerably smaller area than traditional farming, which means natural resources can be preserved. In fact, you can even create a hydroponic growing system in which plants grow vertically instead of horizontally, so you can have many plants growing in a few square inches of space. Building a hydroponics system can easily be done with recycled plastic buckets. Bigger systems sometimes recycle their water, as a result less water is required throughout the growing process. Hydroponics is a simple, clean and easy form of growing plant that anyone can do with very little time involved.
